Having a website is better than no website — but a bad website can actually hurt your business more than having none at all. It signals to potential customers that you're outdated, unreliable, or not serious.

Here are five signs your current website is costing you money.

1. It Doesn't Look Good on a Phone

More than 60% of web traffic now comes from mobile devices. If your website forces users to pinch and zoom, or if your buttons are tiny and hard to tap, visitors leave immediately — and they don't come back.

Test it yourself: Open your site on your phone right now. Can you read everything without zooming? Is the phone number easy to tap? If not, you have a mobile problem.

How to tell: Google ranks mobile-friendly sites higher. If your site isn't mobile-ready, you're losing both customers AND Google ranking.

2. It Loads Slowly

Studies show that 53% of visitors abandon a site that takes more than 3 seconds to load. If your website is hosted on a cheap shared server or loaded with large unoptimized images, you could be losing half your visitors before they even see your homepage.

Test your speed at PageSpeed Insights (free Google tool). A score below 50 is a red flag.

3. Your Contact Information Is Hard to Find

The whole point of your website is to get customers to contact you. If your phone number isn't visible on the first screen, or if there's no easy contact form, you're making people work too hard. Every extra click or scroll is a potential customer you lose.

Your phone number should be in the header, visible on every page. A contact form should be one scroll away at most.

4. The Design Looks Like 2012

Web design trends evolve fast. A website with outdated fonts, stock photos from 10 years ago, or a cluttered layout signals to visitors that your business is also outdated. First impressions form in about 50 milliseconds — and design is 94% of that first impression.

You don't need to redesign every year, but if your site is more than 4–5 years old, it's probably hurting your credibility.

5. You Have No Reviews or Social Proof

Customers trust other customers more than they trust you. If your website shows no reviews, no testimonials, no star ratings, and no indication that other people have used your service successfully — visitors are skeptical.

A modern business website should show at least 3–5 real customer reviews with names, star ratings, and if possible, the service type. Even better: a Google review widget that updates automatically.

What to Do About It

If any of these sounds like your site, you have two options:

  1. Patch it yourself — if you have the technical skills. But this often leads to hours of frustration for a mediocre result.
  2. Get a new site built right — for a one-time investment that actually converts visitors into customers.

We build modern local business websites that are fast, mobile-ready, and built to convert. The difference from a DIY site is usually obvious.
